“Welcome to the 2006 Olympic Games!”
Annaliese Korper felt her heart thrill in her chest as she marched with the rest of the United States Summer Olympics Team. She was favored to win the Gold or Silver in Archery at these games, training from when she was barely old enough to hold a bow until now. At 21, she was finally the best in the country – possibly the world – who wasn’t a superhero at this sport.
She didn’t know that one of the trainers for the team had been dosing a number of athletes was secretly working for the international criminal conspiracy known as SPIDER. Nor did she know that she was one of those whose food he was secretly dosing with a drug to create super-soldier.
It wasn’t until after she took home the Silver and went back to Bothell, WA, that she found out.
A SPIDER strike team tried to kidnap her, and the stress of that fully activated the serum. Her eyesight, always sharp, became in that moment superhuman, and she found herself able to figure out exactly where the arrow would go – just with look she knew just how far away they were and was able to place the arrows perfectly. Her reflexes and hand-eye coordination, trained to the best they could be, became superhuman. Since one of her hobbies had been bow-hunting, it was horrible for the strike team – razor-sharp hunting arrows tearing through their light armor. PTAH picked them up – and her too, for testing.
Days of tests later, and Annaliese found herself calling the IOC to turn her medal in. There was no way, she told them, to discount that the serum hadn’t been in her system when she was competing. It was only right to step down. It broke her heart – it was the one thing that had she’d worked for, and someone else had taken it away from her.
That night she prayed, and she got her answer. Her graduation from the University of Washington had happened not long before, getting her a degree in mechanical engineering, specializing in aeronautic engine design. She designed a small engine, then put together a set of trick arrows, a flight pack, and bought some light body armor. Some work later, and the Scarlet Angel flew the skies of Seattle at night, trying to help put things right for people.
Note on her Social Disadvantage: in 1992, the Greek god Ares attacked North America, causing widespread destruction. As a result, all forms of paganism are considered “problematic” and there is discrimination against publicly out pagans.
