Hello again.

I’m sorry for no updates lately, but I’m traveling for the holidays and that’s put a dent in my thinking time.

Once the new year starts, my hope is to do some more setup tutorials on things
Wordpress, so that the mistakes I make can help other people not make them.

See you in 2011!

The Twitter Tools Setup Quick Walkthrough

Twitter Tools is one of the top plugins for a WordPress install that wants to interoperate well with Twitter. It includes a widget you can put into a space on your WordPress site, the ability to have posts you make auto-notify Twitter, the ability to send tweets right from the WordPress Dashboard, the ability to auto-create the tweets with hashtags, the ability to choose only specific tags and categories to be automatically tweeted… a very powerful tool for social networking.

It can also be a little confusing to someone trying to set it up for the first time.

With that in mind, and making some mistakes along the way, I wrote this walkthrough for people who may want a more guided setup from someone who’s made the mistakes.

The walkthrough can be downloaded (as a PDF) from here: the Twitter Tools Walkthrough.

I’m working on one for Wordbooker, an interconnector plugin for WordPress and Facebook, and hopefully that should be up soon as well.

My great thanks to my friends Vivian Withnail and Matthew Wagner for their gracious and kind reviews of my writing, and especially to Ms. Withnail (who can be found bibliophiling at Withnail And Books for formatting assistance to make it look considerably better.

If you find this helpful, and want to toss me a little bit of money to offset my hosting costs, here’s a little something to use:

So….

Personal issues came up and while the Twitter Tools tutorial is written, it did not get reviewed. I want eyes not mine to look at it, especially if they don’t know much about WordPress, so I can find out about grammatical errors, spelling errors, and things that don’t work well or are ungainly.

Once I get the feedback from the pre-readers, I’ll edit and put together.

I’ve started the draft version of the Wordbooker plugin, and that will go to them, as well, and then up.

Sorry about the delay, but I want things to look good and be understandable – these are aimed at people who may be starting out for the first time with a WordPress install, and they deserve something of quality.

(Also, this will give me some ideas of my skill at technical writing, which is something else I want to advance.)

Today's work.

Today, I did a presentation on how to configure WordPress plugins for the Seattle WordPress Meetup. It went well – people seemed interested, asked questions and understood what I was getting at.

Afterwards, i had people complement me on the presentation.

I’m pretty please with how it turned out.

sufficiently pleased that I’m going to do a quick how-to for setup for both the Twitter Tools and Wordbooker plugins, explaining how to do basic setup and avoid some of the setup mistakes that I made along the way. It’s part of me giving back to the community.

Expect it tomorrow.

Adding to my wide wide world of skills.

Saturday night one of my roommates had a craving for beef udon.

We had none. The other of the roommates is sick – my room is in the basement and I have been woken up by her coughing.

So I went to the store, because Safeway’s online ordering service indicated they had beef udon. It did not. (I have since learned it may in fact be refrigerated, not either dry like Top Ramen, or frozen, and I may have needed to look elsewhere.)

I thought for a bit. Well, I said to myself. There’s udon noodles. And… hm. there’s beef broth…

You can see where this is going, I’m sure.

I got some very thinly sliced top round steak, and went home.

Beef broth in pot, heated up. Steak cut into small bits and tossed into broth to cook in there. Then the noodles tossed in.

About ten minutes later, there was a respectable beef udon-a-like, and my roommate was happy.

Next time I think I’ll see if I can do other things to make it a bit closer to the idea. But it was a moment of inspiration and I think it worked out well.

So: I now can apparently made beef udon. Go me.

Another example of my problem-solving skills, I think.

A bit of clarification:

If you’re looking for me on Facebook, my personal is Geoff Depew; the one that my WordPress blog autoposts to is Geoffrey Depew.

Similarly, my public twitter is @mephron while the one for the WordPress stuff – the more professional things – is @geoffdepew.

If I mention one or the other, it’s not meant to be hiding things, it’s just that I wanted to separate things a little bit.
